Yamaha Rhino and Safety Information
Yamaha has been slow to acknowledge the rollover problems with the Rhino since the vehicles were first introduced in 2003. In September of 2006, Yamaha sent a letter to Rhino owners warning that the Rhino was prone to tip while going through sharp turns. However, this letter seemed to place more blame on the victims themselves instead of Yamaha.
- The September 2006 letter set out the following:
- driver and passenger “must always buckle the seat belt” when riding in the vehicle;
- driver and passenger “must wear approved off-road motorcycle type helmet that fits properly;
- turning too fast or sharp increases the risk of tip over; and
- if the Rhino “starts to tip, gradually steer in the downhill direction if there are no obstacles in your path. As you regain proper balance, gradually steer again in the direction you want to go; if you are in a situation where the vehicle is tipping over, do not put your arm or leg outside the vehicle to try to stop it.”
Finally on August 27, 2007, Yamaha sent a letter to each Yamaha Rhino owner offering a special offer to each owner. Yamaha developed new door and additional passenger handholds for the Rhino. The new features were designed to help keep occupants from sticking arms or legs out of the vehicle in response to a side rollover. Yamaha recommended that the doors and handholds be installed on the Rhino. This offer was made free of charge.
In addition to the special offer, a new adhesive product label was included with the special offer letter. The Rhino owner was also provided an updated guide with this special offer. The company still has not recalled or offered refunds to the owners of the dangerous vehicles. It is not known if the modifications offered by Yamaha will make the vehicles any safer.
In 2008, the Rhino vehicles offered by Yamaha have the doors and handholds already on the vehicles.
