The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning in May 2015 of numerous Type 2 Diabetes medications known as SGLT2 inhibitors that may lead to serious injuries, including ketoacidosis. According to the FDA, they have received hundreds of complaints for the following diabetes drugs:
- Invokana
- Farxiga
- Jardiance
- Xigduo
- Glyxambi
The FDA stated that these medications “may lead to ketoacidosis, a serious condition where the body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones that may require hospitalization.” These medications are generally prescribed to patients with Type 2 Diabetes to improve glucose control and lower blood sugar. SGLT2 inhibitors are different than traditional diabetes drugs because they don’t work on insulin production. They stop kidneys from reabsorbing sugar which leads to the body processing glucose out via urine.
Many serious injuries may be linked to these diabetes drugs, including the following:
- Ketoacidosis
- Kidney Failure
- Heart Attack
- Stroke
- Coma
- Death
The FDA also calls for close attention to be paid to the development of ketoacidosis as this condition develops rather quickly and in some cases, less than 24 hours. Common signs and symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis are difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, and unusual fatigue or sleepiness. It’s recommended to seek medical attention immediately if any of these symptoms are experienced.
