Recent Court Filings
Recent court filings allege that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has perpetuated a pervasive and intentional scheme to cover-up and conceal sexual abuse within the Church. Tragically, the Church’s efforts to hide this abuse, most often perpetrated against children, adolescents, and teenagers, allow the abuse to continue unchecked.
One example of the Church’s cover-up of these heinous crimes is the Church’s “Help Line,” which is available only to Stake Presidents and Bishops (Church-appointed leaders of Wards). Reports of sexual abuse made to the Help Line are not reported to authorities, nor to other vulnerable members who are or may be in contact with the reported abuser. Instead, it is alleged, records of these reports are regularly hidden or even destroyed. This allows the reported abuser to continue freely abusing children. In fact, this type of concealment can encourage abuse, because the abuser is essentially protected by the Church.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has approximately 6.8 million members in the United States. The Church operates as one of the wealthiest private organizations in the world. Recent filings allege that in order to preserve the influx of generations of financial commitments from congregants and to protect the moral reputation of the Church, the Church hides, covers up, and ultimately knowingly and directly benefits from the sexual abuse of minors by Church members and officials.
Survivors of Sexual Abuse Seek Justice
To date numerous lawsuit have been filed against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in state and federal courts across the United States. Lawsuits like these are an important way for abuse survivors to obtain justice against the organization that allowed and encouraged their abuse. Critically, lawsuits like these also often lead to institutional change within organizations, which prevents future abuse. This was true of recent institutional abuse cases involving the Boy Scouts of America, the Catholic Church, and the University of Michigan.
