About Oxbryta (Voxelotor)

Oxbryta was approved by the FDA in 2019 as a treatment for sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder that affects red blood cells and leads to painful and serious health complications. Oxbryta is intended to help prevent red blood cells from sickling, which can block blood vessels and restrict oxygen flow.

While initially considered a breakthrough treatment, new reports have raised serious concerns about the drug’s safety. Many patients have experienced unexpected and severe health issues, and questions have been raised about whether the risks associated with Oxbryta were adequately disclosed by its manufacturer, Pfizer.

Voluntary Withdrawal of Oxbryta from the Market

On September 26, 2024, Pfizer voluntarily recalled Oxbryta from the market. This decision followed alarming findings from post-marketing clinical trials and real-world studies that showed:

  • Increased risk of vaso-occlusive crises (VOC), which are episodes of severe pain caused by sickled red blood cells blocking blood flow.
  • Higher mortality rates in patients taking Oxbryta compared to those receiving a placebo.

These findings led Pfizer to conclude that the potential benefits of Oxbryta no longer outweigh its risks.

Health Risks Linked to Oxbryta

Although Oxbryta was designed to prevent complications of sickle cell disease, it may have actually increased the risk of severe health issues, including:

  • Vaso-occlusive crises (VOC) – leading to severe pain, swelling, fever, kidney failure, and stroke.
  • Organ failure – due to the adverse effects of the drug.
  • Stroke – a serious and potentially life-threatening side effect.
  • Death – particularly in patients who suffered complications from the drug.
