- Cartiva Implant
Davis & Crump is actively investigating claims on behalf of individuals and families harmed by the defective Cartiva Synthetic Cartilage Implant (SCI). Marketed as a breakthrough treatment for arthritis in the big toe joint, this device has been linked to serious complications—including pain, mobility loss, and the need for revision surgery.
If you or someone you know received a Cartiva implant, you may be entitled to compensation. Our attorneys are reviewing cases in all 50 states.
What is the Cartiva Toe Implant?
The Cartiva Synthetic Cartilage Implant was introduced as a minimally invasive alternative to traditional joint fusion surgery. Approved by the FDA in 2016, it is made from a hydrogel material designed to mimic natural cartilage and cushion the big toe joint—offering pain relief while preserving motion.
However, emerging evidence suggests the device is defectively designed and prone to failure, often leading to worse outcomes than the condition it was meant to treat.
Reported Dangers and Complications:
Independent studies have shown that the Cartiva implant fails in more than two-thirds of patients. Reported issues include:
- Worsening Pain – Persistent or increased pain after surgery
- Implant Displacement – The device shifts from its intended position
- Nerve Damage – Loss of mobility or sensation in the toe or foot
- Fragmentation – The implant breaks apart after being placed
- Implant Subsidence – The implant sinks into the surrounding bone
- Revision Surgery – Many patients require costly and painful follow-up procedures, often resulting in joint fusion
Despite these widespread failures, Cartiva continued marketing the implant until it was officially recalled on October 31, 2024.
