What is melanoma?

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that can metastasize, or change, and invade other parts of the body. Recent studies have found evidence that links the use of erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra and Cialis, to the diagnosis of melanoma skin cancer in men. Because of its ability to change and move into other areas, melanoma can lead to disability or even death.

Studies done in 2011, 2012 and 2014 have linked the use of these drugs to the creation of conditions that allow melanoma to develop, change and invade other areas of the body. Other forms of skin cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, have not been linked to the use of erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs.

Erectile dysfunction treatment

You’ve probably seen the commercial with the attractive woman talking about her man knowing what to pack for that special getaway, or the adventurous couples creating romantic moments while camping or shopping for antiques. The ads are all about how men with erectile dysfunction can treat the symptoms with a pill. As required by law, the commercials list common side effects and more dangerous potential risks. However, the manufacturers of these drugs do not disclose any risk of melanoma.

Failure to Warn Lawsuits

Clients of Davis & Crump and other firms are filing an increasing number of lawsuits nationwide claiming that they were not sufficiently warned of the possible risk of melanoma in connection to the use of ED drugs. These lawsuits allege three things:

  • the manufacturers of the ED drugs knew the medications posed a potential cancer risk;
  • they chose to conceal the relevant facts, including the association between the drugs and melanoma;
  • and they failed to thoroughly test the link between their products and melanoma skin cancer before the FDA approved the drugs.

The men filing the lawsuits claim that if they had been given the whole picture, they could have made a more informed decision about whether to use the drugs and at what dosages.
